How to connect a MacBook to a monitor

If you want to use your MacBook with a larger display, you can connect it to an external monitor. Here’s how:

  1. Connect the external monitor to the MacBook using a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) cable.
  2. If you’re using a display that’s not made by Apple, you might need to adjust the display’s settings to optimize its performance with your MacBook. For example, you might need to change the display’s refresh rate.
  3. On your MacBook, click the System Preferences icon in the Dock.
  4. Click Displays, then click the Arrangement tab.
  5. Make sure that the Mirror Displays checkbox isn’t selected.
  6. Click the Display tab, then select a resolution and refresh rate that looks best on your display.

If you want to use your MacBook with a 4K display, make sure that your cable supports 4K resolutions. To learn more about 4K displays, see Use an external display with your MacBook Pro.
